You aren’t the only blogger on the web. There are millions of people with the same goal. Which means that, if you want to have a chance at success, you’ll need to find a way to have an edge over other bloggers… And to do just that, Heidi and I recommend preparing a media kit.
A media kit is a document shared with targeted advertisers or sponsors to show them the value of you as their partner. Media kits contain information such as what your blog is about, who your readers are, your distribution numbers, what you offer, etc. Basically, media kits sell your story to potential clients by communicating your professionalism, personality, and uniqueness.
So, here are three steps to putting together your publicity plan and media kit.
Step 1: Set Your Goal
Do you want to be the most popular blog in your particular niche? Or maybe you want to gain exposure in the media to bring more readers to your blog?
To establish your blog’s marketing and publicity plan, first decide what you hope to achieve. Some goals can overlap, but you need to define one specific goal to guide all of your publicity efforts.

Make your media kit marketable by taking a look at Heidi’s book, Pitch It!.
Step 2: Find Your Angle
To actually get an interview/partnership (as you’ll be using your publicity plan to pitch to the media), your blog has to be relevant to current trends.
If you have a fashion blog, you may want to predict what the hottest fashions will be next award season, or what to expect of a new spring or fall line. If a designer has been in the headlines lately, chime in and offer your expert opinion.
You can try to pitch by:
- Offering your own opinion on a previous piece from a reporter.
- Positioning yourself as an expert in your niche and offer advice.
- Joining forces with other bloggers and coming up with a topic your group can focus on.
- If you have a speaking engagement, advertising it or asking media to show up and check it out.
Step 3: The Media Kit
Once you have your goal and your angle, it’s finally time to put together your media kit! Heidi actually wrote an entire book that delves extensively into creating and compiling a unique and credible media kit at our Learning Library, but we’ll offer up a few of our tips for free right here. First, gather the necessary resources about your blog. This includes:
- Your photo
- Blog logo
- Attractive photos from your blog
- Your blog’s image
- Blog features
- Blog and social media statistics
These will be part of your raw materials as you put your kit together. As a blogger, an electronic media kit as a PDF (not Microsoft Word or Google Docs) is acceptable. For inspiration, you can check out Blogger Babes’ media kit, and The Ambitionista’s media kit.
Present yourself in an attractive way, but be brief and concise about you personally—spend most of your space describing your blog, as that is the heart of the kit. Include statistics such as subscribers, page views, and monthly unique visitors. Gather feedback and testimonials from previous clients and readers to make yourself more credible.
At the end of the kit, highlight your terms and include easy links to purchase sponsorship. Include your name, contact information, and email address. Then be sure to proofread and edit the content to make it perfect.
