Based on this article by Yuyu Chen on ClickZ, I think most moms these days are “millennial moms”, even though we may not actually be millennials, or members of Generation Y born between 1982 and the early 2000s.

But I think Yuyu’s point is that “millennial moms” are the majority (80%) of “new moms”, as the average age of a new mom is 26. So, by her calculations:

Millennial + new mom = Millennial mom.

Yuyu stresses that “social” and “mobile” are two things that make millennial moms different than of Generation X moms like myself, and well, I agree. The convenience of going mobile is something I didn’t have when my girls were babies. Blogs were just blossoming as places for reviews and recommendations. We were light years away from thinking Twitter and Facebook could actually help spread the personalized word-of-mouth advice and recommendations of my trusted family and friends. Pinterest and Instagram didn’t even exist when I was a new mom and my girls were in diapers.

So, fair enough… We’ll go with the term, “new millennial moms”. But that doesn’t change the fact that I believe Yuyu gives some solid advice for all brands to take heed when trying to reach out to “connected moms,” as my dear friend Holly has called them for years.

How Brands Can Reach New Moms AKA The Millennial Moms

  1. Find the emotional truth in modern moms’ lives.
  2. Be whimsical and young.
  3. Go mobile!
  4. Be creative and leverage various social influencers across numerous social media platforms. Brand awareness can best be spread through creative content campaigns that use words (targeted blogs, Twitter), images (Pinterest, Instagram), videos (YouTube, Vine) and more!

The overall point is: if brands are going to market to moms, as Yuyu states, the best way is “if you can serve them humorous, informative, and kid-friendly content that speaks to the emotional truth in their lives.”

All connected moms appreciate the thoughtful, creative, personalized attention-grabbing, and inclusive social media campaigns driven by the voices of those they personally trust, their online influencers.
