Whether you have a huge list with many subscribers or you’re just starting to grow your email list, subscribers come and go. They may opt-out for whatever reason or maybe their email address changes, and they don’t notify you of the change… It’s your job as a savvy blogger and marketer to make sure you are always adding fresh contacts to your list while also maintaining those already there.

It’s up to you to keep your email list building practices strong every day—but how?

Create Your Email List

Well, first you’ll have to make one! The first thing you need is a good email service.

There are many email service providers available; they’re also called autoresponder systems because they have the ability to preset emails at certain intervals, according to the date someone subscribed to your list. For example, you can preset a welcome email with a free opt-in gift to go out immediately after someone subscribes to your list. Then on Day 5, you send out a helpful checklist. On Day 11, you send out a link to a blog post review of your favorite book, etc.

Autoresponder systems are built on the marketing premise that most people buy after seven encounters with a particular brand, company, entrepreneur, or in our case, blogger. You need to make sure you have preset emails sending in addition to your regular newsletter schedule of weekly or bi-monthly emails to keep up your relationship with each individual reader.

Grow Your Email List

There are plenty of ways to grow your email list, but the number one thing to remember is to make it easy to find your email opt-in on your home page. It should be noticeable and quickly spotted when a visitor comes to your site. It’s highly recommended to have it above the fold, or the upper right hand corner of your page.

Then, here are a few ideas on getting opt-ins:

  1. Create a compelling free offer to get visitors to opt in to your list in order to receive it.
  2. Host a giveaway contest in which entrants have to subscribe to your list as a mandatory activity to enter.
  3. Host a webinar to collect names and addresses at registration.
  4. Add an email call-to-action as a custom tab on your Facebook page.
  5. Offer email-only exclusive deals and discounts to add value for your subscribers. Notice how we offer an increased amount of percentage off for each membership type.
  6. Create a full-page landing page (also called a Squeeze Page or opt-in page) dedicated specifically to get subscribers which means you’re getting leads into your sales offer.
  7. Network with and become friends with your competitors. Most of them love to share and are willing to share your free opt-in gift.
  8. Add a call-to-action at the end of some of your blog posts and pages asking people to subscribe to your list.

Millions of businesses already know creating and growing an email list is one of the best ways to increase your reader/fan base and build a sustainable business. Now it’s time for bloggers to wise up to this fact and make email-marketing one of their main priorities when building their blog.
